Attacking Free Kick — Central Shot or Lay-Off

A direct free-kick practice that gives the attacking group two realistic options from central areas: a direct strike or a short lay-off for a second shooter. Players work on disguise, timing, striking quality and reading the goalkeeper and wall.

Develop decision-making and execution from central direct free kicks: shoot at goal or use a short lay-off to improve the shooting angle.

Organization

Set a full-size goal with goalkeeper and a defensive wall. Place free kicks in two or three central and inside-channel positions 18–25m from goal. Use one main taker, one lay-off player and supporting attackers for rebounds. Rotate roles regularly.

Coaching Points

Read goalkeeper and wall before choosing the option | Keep the approach consistent to disguise the decision | Lay-off touch must set the ball into the striker’s path | Strike through a clear target area | React to rebounds immediately

Progressions

  • Add a live defender who can break from the wall to press the second shooter after the lay-off.

Regressions

  • Use a passive wall and repeat from one fixed central position.
