Shoulder-Fake Square Pass — Sell Forward, Play Sideways

A passing pattern where the receiver visibly shapes to play forward, draws a pressing reference toward that lane, then releases a square pass to a teammate arriving outside the pressure.

Organization

Create a central receiving point with one forward target and one lateral target. A passer serves the central player. The receiver checks the forward target, turns shoulders toward it, then plays square to the lateral runner. Rotate the direction after each sequence.

Coaching Points

Scan both options before receiving | Make the forward fake believable with eyes and shoulders | Keep the ball on the safe foot | Square pass should travel in front of the runner | Reset body shape quickly after the release

Progressions

  • Add a defender who reacts to the receiver's body shape and can block one option.

Regressions

  • Use a passive pressure reference and a fixed lateral target.
