180° Turn Reaction — Scan Behind and Sprint to Gate

Player faces forward and reacts to a coach call by scanning over the shoulder, turning 180°, and sprinting through the named gate. The exercise builds the reactive scanning and explosive acceleration needed when play reverses behind a player.

Develop the ability to scan behind, turn 180°, and sprint to a gate — building the reaction and acceleration needed for transitions and chasing play.

Organization

Set up 4 gates (2 cones 1m apart) in a semicircle behind a centre mark in a 10×10m area. Player faces forward. Coach calls a number (1-4). Player scans over the shoulder to locate the gate, turns 180°, and sprints through it. Walk back, repeat. 8 reps, rest 30s, 3 sets.

Coaching Points

1. Scan over the shoulder first — know where the gate is before turning. 2. Turn on the balls of the feet — pivot, don't step around. 3. The first step after the turn is a sprint — drive the arms. 4. Keep low through the turn — don't stand up. 5. Don't look back after turning — trust the scan and go. 6. Accelerate through the gate, don't slow down at it.

Progressions

  • Coach calls the number after the player has started jogging forward — turn from movement.
  • Add a ball — player must dribble through the gate after turning.

Regressions

  • Coach points to the gate — no scanning needed.
  • Use only 2 gates — simpler decision.
