3-1-2 Midfield Ladder — 6 Anchors, 8s on Different Lines

A positional spacing exercise where the midfield triangle is stretched vertically rather than flattened. The 6 anchors below pressure while the two 8s occupy different heights and alternate which player connects forward.

Maintain vertical separation between a 6 and two 8s so the midfield offers three distinct receiving lines.

Organization

Mark three horizontal midfield bands in a 32x28m area. Use three build-up players, one 6 and two 8s against four defenders. The 6 remains in the lowest midfield band; the two 8s may not occupy the same band at the same time.

Coaching Points

Avoid flat midfield lines | 6 stays available beneath pressure | One 8 supports, the other threatens higher space | Change heights as the ball moves | Passer scans the next line before using the safe option

Progressions

  • Add a fifth defender who can track an 8 between bands.

Regressions

  • Use three defenders and allow one 8 to remain free.
