3v3 Rotating Target Gates — Goal Changes on the Call

The coach calls which of four sideline gates is live at any moment, and teams must instantly redirect their attack toward the active target. The shifting goal trains scanning, listening, and the ability to change attacking direction without losing possession.

Develop 3v3 possession and scanning by attacking rotating target gates — the coach calls which gate is live, forcing players to scan and adapt their attack direction.

Organization

Set up a 25×20m area with 4 gates (2 cones 1.5m apart) on the sidelines — one on each side. 3v3. Teams score by dribbling through the live gate. Coach calls which gate is live every 15-20 seconds (or after each score). If the ball goes out, restart with a pass. 3-minute games, rotate opponents.

Coaching Points

1. Head up — listen for the gate call and scan to find it. 2. Don't attack a gate that's not live — wait for the call. 3. When the gate changes, quickly redirect the attack. 4. Use the extra player (3v3) to create a passing option toward the new gate. 5. Defenders: block the path to the live gate, force play away. 6. Quick transitions — when the gate changes, the first team to react scores.

Progressions

  • Coach changes the gate every 10 seconds — faster rotation.
  • Add a 5th gate in the centre — more options, more scanning.

Regressions

  • Use 2 gates only — simpler decision.
  • Coach calls the gate before the game starts — no in-play changes.
