4v3 to 3v4 Turnover Game — Attack Ends, Roles Reverse

A wave transition practice where four attackers face three defenders toward one goal. When defenders regain or the attack finishes, three of the original attackers must immediately defend a four-player counter in the opposite direction.

Develop instant role reversal by changing a 4v3 attack into a 3v4 counterattack when possession changes or the action ends.

Organization

Use a 40x28m pitch with mini-goals or full goals at both ends. Start 4v3 to one end. On regain, goal or coach trigger, a new attacker enters for the previous defending team to create 4v3 in the opposite direction, while only three previous attackers may recover.

Coaching Points

React before discussing roles | Nearest player delays the counter immediately | Recovering defenders protect the centre first | Counterattacking team uses width to exploit the temporary overload | Finish the transition before equality is restored

Progressions

  • Add goalkeepers and use full goals for more realistic finishing decisions.

Regressions

  • Start with 3v2 → 2v3 to simplify the role reversal.
