4v4 Third-Man Scoring Game — Set, Run and Penetrate

A 4v4 directional game where normal goals are allowed, but bonus scoring is awarded when a player passes, a teammate sets the ball, and a third player runs beyond to receive. The condition encourages third-man movement inside a realistic game.

Develop recognising third-man movement by rewarding progression after a set pass and run beyond.

Organization

Use a 30x22m pitch with two mini-goals at each end or end zones. Play 4v4. A normal goal is 1 point; a goal or end-zone entry following a clear pass-set-third-man sequence is worth 2 points.

Coaching Points

Passer moves after releasing the ball | Set player plays with the correct angle and weight | Third player starts away from the target space | Do not force the pattern if direct progression is available | Defenders track runners and communicate handovers

Progressions

  • Require every scoring action to include a third-man sequence.

Regressions

  • Use passive end targets instead of mini-goals and allow the sequence to be unopposed at first.
