5v4 Break to 4v3 Return — Finish One Way, Transition Back

A wave transition drill that starts with a 5v4 attack to goal. When the attack ends, four of the defending group counter in the opposite direction against three recovering attackers.

Organization

Use a 50x40m area with a full-size goal at one end and two mini-goals at the other. Five attackers face four defenders plus goalkeeper. On goal, save or regain, four players break toward the mini-goals while only three designated attackers may recover initially.

Coaching Points

First attack uses the 5v4 without rushing | Transition starts immediately when the action ends | Countering four spread quickly | Recovering three protect the centre first | Players understand which role they have before the repetition begins

Progressions

  • Allow a fourth recovery defender to join after three seconds.

Regressions

  • Start the return counter from a coach pass rather than the live first action.
