5v5 Compass Gates — Connect Across One Axis, Score on the Other

A four-direction possession game using north, south, east and west gates. Teams must first connect across one axis, then change the direction of play and score through a gate on the other axis.

Create awareness of changing direction by requiring a connection across one pitch axis before scoring through a gate on the perpendicular axis.

Organization

Mark a 28x28m square with one gate centered on each side. Play 5v5. If a team successfully connects from east to west, its next scoring gate must be north or south; after north-south connection, the next scoring gate must be east or west.

Coaching Points

Scan all four gates before receiving | Use one axis to move the block | Change direction after the required connection | Players away from the ball prepare the perpendicular target | Do not force the scoring gate if possession is unstable

Progressions

  • Require the axis-changing pass to be played with one touch.

Regressions

  • Allow the scoring gate on any side after the first cross-axis connection.
