5v5 Narrow-to-Wide Escape Game — Draw Inside, Release Outside

A 5v5 possession game where the central area is deliberately narrow, encouraging the defending team to collapse around the ball. The possession team scores by recognising the moment to release into a wide escape channel.

Organization

Use a 32x24m field with a narrow 18m central zone and two 7m wide channels. Play 5v5 with one player allowed to enter each wide channel for the team in possession. A point is scored when the ball moves from central congestion to a wide receiver who controls forward.

Coaching Points

Attract pressure centrally before switching | Wide player waits outside the pressure rather than coming too early | Support underneath the wide receiver | First touch in the wide channel goes forward | If the far side is closed, recycle and rebuild

Progressions

  • Make the wide receiver one-touch and require a return pass inside to complete the point.

Regressions

  • Allow permanent wide neutrals to make the escape option easier.
