6v5 Recovery Race — Attack Before Block Sets

A larger transition game where six attackers break against five defenders and must recognise the best route forward before the sixth defender recovers. The exercise develops tempo, width and decision-making against a changing numerical picture.

Develop attacking quickly against an incomplete defensive block while a recovering defender races back to restore equality.

Organization

Use a 50x40m area to one full goal. Six attackers start near halfway against five defenders; the sixth defender begins 10–15m behind and starts on the coach's trigger. Attack continues until a shot, regain or the recovering defender restores 6v6.

Coaching Points

Attack forward before the recovery changes the picture | Use the free player rather than carrying into pressure | Width creates lanes for central runners | Defenders delay and protect the middle until help arrives | Finish or create a decisive action before equality returns

Progressions

  • Start the recovering defender farther away or give attackers a 10-second scoring window.

Regressions

  • Start recovery closer and allow the attack to begin with a controlled pass rather than a live regain.
