Asymmetric Double Pivot — Ball-Side 6 Drops, Far 6 Stays High

A double-pivot exercise that removes the habit of both midfielders dropping toward the ball. The ball-side pivot lowers to support while the far pivot remains higher and becomes the next progression option.

Create different heights between two pivots so one supports the ball while the far pivot stays available beyond pressure.

Use a 36x30m positional area with two centre-backs, two pivots, two wide outlets and target players against four pressers. On each side of circulation, only the ball-side pivot may drop into the lower support band.

Coaching Points

Pivots occupy different heights | Far pivot stays visible beyond pressure | Ball-side pivot supports at an angle, not directly behind the ball | Switch roles as the ball changes side | Centre-backs recognise when to bypass the near pivot

Progressions

  • Allow one defender to man-mark the far pivot.

Regressions

  • Use three pressers and widen the lower support band.
