Ball Tag Pairs — Protect, Chase and Switch

One player dribbles and shields the ball while a partner chases and tries to tag the ball with their hand, then the pair switch roles on the coach's call. The tag format makes ball protection competitive and trains close control while moving under chase pressure.

Develop ball protection and chasing in a fun tag game — one player dribbles and protects the ball while the other chases and tries to tag the ball, building competitive ball shielding.

Organization

In a 15×15m area, pairs play tag. One player dribbles and protects the ball; the other chases and tries to tag the ball (not the player) with their hand. If the chaser tags the ball, swap roles. The dribbler must shield, change direction, and escape. 60s rounds, rest 30s, 4 rounds. Rotate partners between rounds.

Coaching Points

1. Keep the ball on the foot furthest from the chaser — shield with the body. 2. Change direction frequently — don't run in a straight line. 3. Keep the head up — see where the chaser is. 4. Use feints and turns to lose the chaser. 5. Don't kick the ball away — keep it close and protected. 6. The chaser: be quick, anticipate the direction change, cut the corner.

Progressions

  • Add a second chaser — 1v2, more pressure on the dribbler.
  • The chaser must tag with their foot, not hand — harder and more realistic.

Regressions

  • The chaser jogs — doesn't sprint, gives the dribbler time.
  • Make the area larger (20×20m) — more space to escape.
