Chase Dribble — Protect the Running Line and Escape

The attacker dribbles at speed down a lane with a defender chasing from behind, using the body to shield the ball and accelerating away when the defender commits. The drill trains the ability to carry the ball at pace while sensing and resisting rear pressure.

Organization

Set up a 20×10m lane. Attacker starts at one end with the ball, defender starts 2m behind. On the whistle, attacker dribbles toward the far line while the defender chases. Attacker must protect the ball (body between defender and ball) and reach the line. If the defender touches the ball, the rep restarts. 4 reps per player as attacker, rest 30s between reps, swap roles.

Coaching Points

1. Keep the ball on the foot furthest from the defender — use the body as a shield. 2. Dribble at a speed you can control — don't kick and run. 3. Lean slightly into the defender if they get close — use your shoulder, not your arm. 4. If the defender overcommits to one side, cut to the other and accelerate. 5. Keep the head up — see the line and the defender at the same time. 6. Don't slow down to shield — keep moving forward.

Progressions

  • Start the defender 1m behind instead of 2m — less reaction time.
  • Add a cone gate at the end — attacker must exit through a specific 1m gate, not just cross the line.

Regressions

  • Start the defender 3m behind — more time and space.
  • Widen the lane to 15m — more room to escape laterally.
