Clearance Regain Relay — Win Second Ball, Switch the Counter Lane

A defending-to-attacking transition exercise where a clearance is only the first action. The team must then compete for the second ball and switch the counter lane before progressing.

Organization

Start with an attack toward one goal. The defending team clears into a marked midfield second-ball zone. If defenders regain the loose ball, they must connect one secure pass and then transfer into the opposite counter lane before attacking two mini-goals.

Coaching Points

Clear away from central danger | Nearest midfielders anticipate the second ball | First pass after regain secures possession | Switch away from the crowded clearance side | Counter runners open before the switch arrives

Progressions

  • Allow the original attacking team to counterpress immediately around the second-ball zone.

Regressions

  • Coach the clearance direction and give the regaining team a free first pass.
