Transition Overload — Attack the Rest Defence

A transition game where one team attacks with numbers after a regain but faces a small, pre-positioned rest-defence unit. The practice links attacking transition decisions with the defending team’s ability to delay, protect the middle and recover support.

Exploit a regain against an organised rest-defence unit while teaching the defending team to delay and protect central space.

Organization

Use a 50x40m area with a full-size goal at one end and two mini goals at the other. Start 5v5 in a central zone while two defenders remain as rest defence. On regain, the attacking team breaks quickly toward the full-size goal against the two rest defenders plus recovering players.

Coaching Points

First action after regain should threaten forward | Attack spaces outside the rest defenders | Ball carrier fixes one defender before releasing | Rest defence protects the centre first | Recovery players sprint inside the ball line

Progressions

  • Allow one rest defender to step into the possession phase, creating more realistic risk-reward decisions.

Regressions

  • Use a clear 4v2 transition so attacking numbers are easier to recognise.
