Clipped Pass Over Pressure — Cushion and Connect

Players use a clipped pass to bypass a compact pressure line, then the receiving player cushions the ball into a playable space before connecting with a nearby teammate. The practice links aerial passing quality with first-touch control and support.

Develop a controlled clipped pass over short pressure and a soft first touch that allows the receiver to connect the next action.

Organization

Create two 12x12m boxes separated by a 5m pressure channel. Three players work in each box with one or two defenders in the middle channel. The possession side clips the ball over pressure into the far box, where the receiver controls and connects a short pass before the next transfer.

Coaching Points

Strike underneath the ball without over-hitting it | Scan the receiver and pressure before clipping | Receive side-on and cushion into free space | Support underneath the first receiver quickly | Keep the next pass simple after the aerial action

Progressions

  • Allow defenders to leave the middle channel and press the receiver after the clipped pass.

Regressions

  • Remove defenders and shorten the transfer distance until passing and control are consistent.
