Closing-Gates Dribble — Find the Next Open Door

The player dribbles toward a series of gates that the coach opens and closes on the call, forcing the player to scan ahead, identify the open path, and redirect instantly. The exercise trains head-up dribbling and the ability to process visual information while moving with the ball.

Develop scanning and quick decision-making by dribbling through a series of gates that open and close on the coach's call, finding the open path.

Organization

Set up 3 gates (2 cones 1.5m apart) across a 25×15m lane at 8m, 16m, and 24m. Coach stands behind the gates and calls 'left', 'centre', or 'right' — only that gate is 'open'. Players dribble and must exit through the open gate at each line. Coach calls the next gate as the player approaches. If a player goes through a closed gate, they do 5 toe-taps. 4 runs per player, rest 45s.

Coaching Points

1. Listen for the call early — don't wait until you're at the gate. 2. Scan to the coach as you approach each gate line. 3. Change direction quickly — use a cut or hook to redirect. 4. Keep the ball close when changing direction — short, sharp touches. 5. Accelerate through the open gate — don't slow down to check. 6. If you miss the call, pick a gate and commit — don't stop.

Progressions

  • Coach calls the gate only when the player is 2m away — very tight decision window.
  • Use hand signals instead of verbal calls — visual scanning only.

Regressions

  • Coach calls the gate before the player starts — pre-planned route.
  • Use only 2 gates — simpler decision.
