Corner Clearance to Outside Break — First Defender Delays the Wide Counter

A corner-transition exercise where the clearance does not travel centrally. The defending team breaks through an outside lane and the attacking team's nearest rest-defender must delay rather than dive in.

Organise the first defensive reaction after an attacking corner is cleared wide, with the nearest player delaying while teammates recover centrally.

Organization

Set up an attacking corner into a full-size goal with goalkeeper and two mini-goals near halfway in the wide channels. On a defensive clearance into either side, two or three defenders counter wide while three attacking rest-defenders recover.

Coaching Points

Nearest defender delays the outside ball carrier | Recovery players sprint inside the ball line | Do not all chase toward the touchline | Countering team uses width to escape the corner area | Goalkeeper communicates the side of the counter

Progressions

  • Allow an extra counter runner to join through the opposite channel.

Regressions

  • Start the counter from a controlled wide pass rather than a live clearance.
