Defend the Underlap — Pass Runner and Protect Half-Space

A flank defending exercise where the ball carrier stays wide while a supporting attacker runs inside through the half-space. Defenders must communicate the handover, protect the central lane and avoid both following the same player.

Organization

Use a 28x22m flank area with winger, underlapping runner, supporting midfielder and three defenders. The attack begins wide and can combine into the half-space. Defenders score by forcing play backwards, intercepting or preventing entry into the finishing zone.

Coaching Points

Wide defender pressures the ball without opening the inside lane | Central defender recognises the underlap early | Call the handover before the runner crosses behind | Protect goal-side space first | After the pass, recover into a compact triangle

Progressions

  • Add a striker in the box to create a second central threat.

Regressions

  • Use a passive underlap runner and rehearse communication before going live.
