Delayed Finish vs Set Goalkeeper — Pause, Move the Keeper, Place

A finishing practice that rewards patience rather than immediate shooting. The attacker enters the box under control, uses a pause or extra touch to make the goalkeeper set, then finishes into the space created.

Improve composure by delaying the shot long enough to read a set goalkeeper before selecting the final corner.

Organization

Use a full-size goal with goalkeeper. Attackers receive or dribble into the box from a central angle with no immediate defender. The attacker must enter a marked decision zone, pause or take one controlled lateral touch, read the goalkeeper's set position and finish.

Coaching Points

Approach under control | Keep the ball close during the pause | Watch the goalkeeper, not only the ball | Move the goalkeeper before choosing the corner | Do not delay once the shooting lane is open

Progressions

  • Add a recovering defender who arrives after the attacker enters the decision zone.

Regressions

  • Start closer to goal and let the goalkeeper remain central.
