Organization

Use a 35x28m attacking area with passer, winger, two defensive references and goalkeeper. Winger begins wide, waits for the passer's touch, then runs diagonally between the fullback and centre-back cones/defenders. Pass is played into the run for a first- or second-touch finish.

Coaching Points

Start wide enough to create a real diagonal lane | Time the run after the defender's attention moves to the ball | Curve the run to stay onside | First touch takes the ball toward goal, not across the defender | Choose near- or far-post finish based on goalkeeper position

Progressions

  • Use live fullback and centre-back defenders who can track or pass the runner on.

Regressions

  • Use mannequins and slow the service until the run timing is consistent.
