Dummy Let-Run Combination — First Player Leaves, Third Player Connects

A combination pattern built around a deliberate dummy. The apparent receiver moves toward the ball but leaves it, allowing a third player to receive on the move and play forward.

Develop communication and timing when one player deliberately lets the pass run to a better-positioned teammate.

Organization

Set a diamond with a passer, dummy player, third receiver and forward target. The pass travels toward the dummy player, who checks to the ball and lets it run between the feet or across the body. The third player collects and connects with the forward target.

Coaching Points

Scan the third player before the ball travels | Dummy movement must look genuine | Communicate the leave early enough | Third player attacks the ball's path | Continue forward immediately after the deception

Progressions

  • Add a defender who can follow either the dummy player or the third receiver.

Regressions

  • Walk through the timing without opposition and use a slower service.
