Double Scissors Decision Gates — Commit, Shift and Escape

The player performs two consecutive step-overs and exits with the outside of the first foot toward a gate chosen by a visual cue, combining the feint with a directional decision. The drill trains the double scissors technique alongside the scanning needed to pick the correct exit.

Develop the double scissors (two consecutive step-overs, exit with the outside of the first foot) and the ability to choose the exit direction based on a visual cue.

Organization

Set up 3 gates (2 cones 1.5m apart) in a 20×20m area — left, centre, right. Player dribbles toward the centre. Coach calls a colour (left = red gate, right = blue gate) as the player approaches. Player executes a double scissors and exits through the called gate. Walk back, repeat 8 times. Rest 60s, 3 sets.

Coaching Points

1. Two quick step-overs — the second one must be faster than the first. 2. Keep the body upright during the feints — don't lean too far either way. 3. Listen for the call before the second step-over — decide the exit early. 4. Exit with the outside of the foot that did the first step-over. 5. Accelerate through the gate — don't slow down to admire the move. 6. Keep the ball close during the scissors — it should barely move.

Progressions

  • Coach calls the colour after the first step-over — tighter decision window.
  • Add a passive defender who closes the gate not called — player must adapt.

Regressions

  • Coach calls the colour before the player starts — no in-flight decision.
  • Do a single scissors instead of a double until the rhythm is clean.
