Dribbling SSG — Beat a Player to Score

A small-sided game where goals only count after a successful dribble past an opponent or after a player carries through a bonus gate. It creates repeated realistic moments to commit defenders without turning the practice into isolated 1v1 channels.

Encourage players to beat opponents in a small-sided game and immediately exploit the space created by successful dribbling.

Organization

Play 3v3 to 5v5 in a 28x22m area with two mini goals at each end. Place one bonus dribbling gate in each attacking half. A goal is worth two points if the move includes a successful take-on or controlled gate carry.

Coaching Points

Receive facing forward when possible | Attack space before the defender sets | Commit the defender before changing direction | Support around the dribbler for the next pass | Release the ball once the advantage is created

Progressions

  • Limit support players to two touches so the dribbler has more responsibility to create the advantage.

Regressions

  • Widen the pitch and add neutral support players.
