Receive Under Pressure — Protect and Release

A receiving-under-pressure practice where the target player must use body position to protect the ball before finding support. It develops scanning, first-contact strength, awareness of pressure and choosing the safe release direction.

Receive with a defender on the shoulder, protect possession and release the ball to a supporting teammate.

Organization

Create 12x10m channels. One passer serves a target player with a defender starting tight behind. Two support players provide left and right release options. Rotate passer, target and defender every few repetitions.

Coaching Points

Check the pressure before receiving | Put body between defender and ball | First touch stays within protection distance | Use the arm legally for balance and information | Release as soon as support becomes available

Progressions

  • Allow the target to turn and escape if the defender overcommits, then connect to a forward target.

Regressions

  • Start the defender one metre away and allow unlimited touches.
