Far-Fullback Narrowing — Protect Back Post Before Wide Switch

A back-line exercise where play starts on one side and can switch quickly. The far fullback must first protect the box and only release wider when the switched pass is travelling.

Teach the far-side fullback to narrow early and protect the back-post corridor before reacting to a switch of play.

Organization

Use the width of the penalty area with a full-size goal and goalkeeper. Four defenders face three or four attackers plus wide servers. Start attacks on one flank. The far fullback narrows toward the back post, then moves outward only when the switch leaves the passer.

Coaching Points

Far fullback starts narrow enough to defend the back post | Scan far winger before the switch | Move outward as the ball travels, not before | Far centre-back protects the inside channel | Goalkeeper communicates depth and far-post danger

Progressions

  • Allow the far winger to attack either back post or short to receive the switch.

Regressions

  • Use fixed wide servers and passive attacking runs.
