Final-Third Shot Block to 2v2 Break — Two Attackers Become Recovery Defenders

A transition drill that starts with a realistic final-third shot. When the shot is blocked or saved into play, two defenders counter immediately and two of the original attackers must recover to defend the break.

React to a blocked shot by immediately converting attacking players into recovery defenders against a 2v2 break.

Organization

Use a full-size goal with goalkeeper at one end and two mini-goals 35m away. Four attackers combine for a shot against two defenders. If the goalkeeper or defender blocks the shot into play, the two defenders counter toward the mini-goals while two nominated attackers recover, creating a live 2v2.

Coaching Points

Attackers react on the block, not after the defender controls | Recovery players protect the middle first | Countering defenders separate quickly | First counter pass should escape the shooting area | Goalkeeper communicates which attackers are nearest to recover

Progressions

  • Allow a third countering player to join after the first pass.

Regressions

  • Start the counter from a coach pass instead of a live block.
