Fullback Inside-Shoulder Duel — Deny Underlap Before Recovering Outside

A wide defending duel where the fullback faces a winger and an inside runner. The defender's priority is to protect the underlap lane before adjusting to the ball carrier's outside action.

Organization

Mark a 18x14m wide channel leading toward a crossing gate or mini-goal. A winger starts on the ball, an inside runner begins deeper and one fullback defends. The runner can underlap once the winger engages the defender.

Coaching Points

Protect the inside shoulder first | Stay close enough to affect the winger | Check the runner repeatedly | Recover outside only when the underlap is controlled | Do not open the central lane by overcommitting to the touchline

Progressions

  • Add a second defender recovering from inside to create communication decisions.

Regressions

  • Use a passive underlap runner and allow the fullback to focus on body position.
