Goalkeeper-Back-Line Trigger — Step on Return Pass, Drop on Open Body

A back-line coordination game where defenders must alternate between squeezing and dropping according to the attacker's body shape and pass direction. The goalkeeper manages the space behind the line.

Synchronise goalkeeper and back-line depth using two opposite triggers: step on a negative return pass and drop when the ball carrier opens to play behind.

Organization

Use a 50x40m area with a full-size goal and goalkeeper. Six attackers circulate against a back four plus two midfield defenders. When the ball goes backward, the back line steps; when a receiver opens forward with time, the line drops and the goalkeeper adjusts.

Coaching Points

Step together on a secure negative pass | Drop immediately when forward body shape appears | Goalkeeper adjusts starting position with the line | Check runners before every step | Midfield pressure determines how aggressive the line can be

Progressions

  • Apply full offside and allow repeated runs behind.

Regressions

  • Use guided passing sequences with clear coach-called triggers.
