Low Cross Behind Defence — Runner Checks Back Instead of Attacking Goal

A finishing pattern that trains the opposite movement to a normal goal attack. As defenders collapse toward the goal, the runner brakes and checks back toward the penalty spot or edge to meet a low ball arriving behind them.

Finish a low cross by checking away from the goal line into the space behind defenders who are recovering toward their own goal.

Organization

Use a full-size goal with goalkeeper, one wide crosser and two central attackers against two recovering defenders. The ball is released wide, defenders recover toward goal and one attacker checks back into the space they leave for a low cut-behind delivery.

Coaching Points

Read defender momentum toward goal | Check back late, not before the cross is ready | Crosser plays behind the defensive line, not toward the six-yard box | Finish with controlled placement | Second attacker occupies the goal line to keep defenders deep

Progressions

  • Allow one defender to step back out and close the checking runner.

Regressions

  • Use passive defenders and mark the checking target zone.
