Pivot Drops Between Centre-Backs — Build a Back Three

A build-up practice where the pivot drops from midfield between two centre-backs as pressure arrives, changing the first-line structure from two to three. Players learn when the drop creates a free player and when the pivot should stay higher.

Develop the timing of a pivot dropping between split centre-backs to create a temporary back three during build-up.

Organization

Use a 35x28m build-up zone with goalkeeper, two centre-backs, pivot, two wide targets and three pressers. Begin with the pivot in midfield. On pressure cues, the pivot can drop between the centre-backs to create a 3+GK first line and progress through wide or central exit gates.

Coaching Points

Pivot scans the press before deciding to drop | Centre-backs widen early to create the central lane | Do not drop automatically if the pivot is already free higher | Use the goalkeeper to change the pressing angle | Progress forward as soon as the extra player is created

Progressions

  • Add a fourth presser and a midfield target beyond the first line.

Regressions

  • Remove one presser and rehearse the timing of the pivot drop without full pressure.
