Quick Throw-In — Switch the Point

A throw-in restart practice focused on speed of thought rather than a fixed pattern. Players recognise the nearest safe option, bounce the ball inside and switch quickly to the opposite side while the defence is still shifting.

Use a fast throw-in to escape pressure and switch play before the opposition can reorganise.

Organization

Create a 30x24m area with touchlines and two teams. Start each repetition with a throw-in on one side. The attacking team has five seconds to restart and aims to connect through a central player before transferring the ball to a target on the far side.

Coaching Points

Retrieve and restart quickly | First receiver checks away then shows | Support underneath the ball | Central player scans before receiving | Switch with the fewest useful passes

Progressions

  • Make the defenders fully live and award two points if the far-side target is reached within eight seconds.

Regressions

  • Use passive defenders and allow the first receiver unlimited touches.
