Receive, Protect, Bounce — Rear Pressure Support

The receiver takes a pass with a defender pressing from behind, shields the ball with the body, then bounces a pass to a supporting teammate rather than turning into pressure. The drill trains the possession habit of protecting the ball and finding a simple outlet when a turn is not available.

Develop the ability to receive with back-to-goal pressure, protect the ball with the body, and bounce a pass to a supporting teammate — a key possession habit under pressure.

Organization

Set up a 12×10m area. 3 attackers in a line, 1 defender behind the middle attacker. Front attacker passes to the middle attacker. Defender applies pressure from behind. Middle attacker receives, protects the ball with the body (shield), then bounces a pass to the back attacker. Back attacker plays to the front attacker. Continue. Rotate defender every 90s.

Coaching Points

1. Receive with the body between the ball and the defender — shield. 2. Feel the defender — don't turn into them, hold them off. 3. Keep the ball on the foot furthest from the defender. 4. Bounce the pass quickly — don't hold the ball too long. 5. The bounce pass is firm and to the support player's feet. 6. After bouncing, move to create a new angle for the next pass.

Progressions

  • Add a second defender — 3v2, more pressure on the receiver.
  • Limit the receiver to one touch after the protection — quick bounce.

Regressions

  • Defender is passive — applies light pressure, doesn't tackle.
  • Use two touches — receive, protect, then pass with no time pressure.
