Organization

Set up a compact rectangular area with flat markers. One starting passer, one central receiver who checks away and arrives side-on, and two forward/outside targets (or small target gates). The passer plays in; the receiver scans before the ball arrives, receives on the open body with a directional first touch away from pressure and into the next lane, then plays forward to a target. After playing, the receiver rotates to create the next repetition. The receiver always has at least two viable forward options so the choice requires a real scan.

Coaching Points

Scan before the pass travels. Check both shoulders where appropriate. Arrive side-on. Receive on the back foot when possible. First touch away from pressure and into the next action — do not kill the ball unnecessarily. Weight and accuracy of the forward pass. Move immediately after passing. Communicate and adjust angle to stay visible. Increase tempo only when technique remains clean.

Progressions

  • Add passive visual pressure or a signal cue
  • Restrict the receiver to two touches
  • Receiver chooses left or right target based on a late cue
  • Increase the speed of circulation

Regressions

  • Larger distances to give more preparation time
  • Fixed receiver starting position
  • No late cue
  • Allow additional touches
