Second Ball from the Cross — React and Score

A cross-specific second-ball practice where the first delivery is deliberately contested or cleared into an edge-of-box zone. Attackers must anticipate the clearance, secure the loose ball and create a fast second finish.

React to a partially cleared cross, attack the second ball and finish before the defence can reset.

Organization

Use a full-size goal with goalkeeper, one wide server, two attacking runners and two defenders in the box. Add two edge-of-box attackers. Coach the defenders to clear realistic first balls into different zones, then keep the phase live.

Coaching Points

Edge players read the flight before the clearance | Stay balanced outside the box | First touch prepares the shot or next pass | Box attackers react for rebounds | Defenders step out together after the first clearance

Progressions

  • Make the clearance direction fully random and allow defenders to counter if they secure the second ball.

Regressions

  • Coach serves predictable clearances to one edge-of-box player.
