Second-Ball Win to Far-Side Break — Secure Central, Release Opposite Winger

A transition exercise starting from an aerial or loose second ball in the middle. The team that wins it must first secure possession, then find a winger holding width on the opposite side.

Turn a central second-ball regain into a fast far-side attack by securing the first contact before releasing the opposite winger.

Organization

Use a 44x34m area with a central second-ball zone and two wide target lanes. A coach serves an aerial ball into a 3v3 or 4v4 central contest. One winger from each team stays in the far lane. After a clean regain, the team tries to find its opposite winger within two passes.

Coaching Points

First contact secures the ball rather than forcing the switch | Far winger stays wide during the contest | Supporting midfielder opens the passing lane after the regain | Switch only when pressure has been controlled | Far-side receiver attacks forward with first touch

Progressions

  • Require the far winger to attack a mini-goal with the next action.

Regressions

  • Allow three passes to reach the far-side winger.
