Second-Line Finish Through Traffic — 8 Shoots as 9 Screens and 10 Clears

A finishing practice where the shot comes from the second line rather than the striker. The 9 occupies the centre-back and the 10 moves out of the shooting corridor as the 8 arrives onto a set ball.

Create a clean shooting lane for a second-line midfielder by coordinating screening and clearing movements ahead of the shot.

Organization

Use a full-size goal with goalkeeper. Position an 8 outside the box, a 10 between lines, a 9 central and two passive-to-live defenders. The ball is played into the 10, set back or sideways, and the 8 finishes through the lane created by the front players.

Coaching Points

9 screens without fouling | 10 clears the shooting line after the set | 8 arrives onto the ball rather than waiting | Finish before defenders can step out | Keep the strike low if the goalkeeper's sightline is blocked

Progressions

  • Make both defenders fully live and allow the 10 to turn if the lane is not available.

Regressions

  • Use one passive defender and predetermine the set direction.
