Short Corner Routine — Play and Return

A short-corner routine that teaches the relationship between the corner taker, support player and edge-of-box option. The ball is played short, returned or bounced inside, and the attack looks to deliver from a new angle before the defence can reset.

Create a better crossing or penetration angle through a short-corner give-and-return combination.

Organization

Use a full-size goal with goalkeeper and defenders. Place two attackers near the corner and one support player 8–12m inside. Rehearse play-and-return, bounce-inside and overlap options before making the phase live.

Coaching Points

Use movement to draw the nearest defender | First pass must be crisp | Support player opens body to see the box | Deliver before the defence resets | Maintain second-ball cover outside the box

Progressions

  • Allow defenders to press aggressively and let attackers choose between return, overlap and inside bounce options.

Regressions

  • Rehearse one fixed play-and-return pattern without defenders.
