Switch Through the 6 — Release Opposite Fullback

A positional build-up exercise where one side attracts pressure and the pivot becomes the bridge for a fast switch to the far fullback. The objective is to use the number 6 as a central connector rather than circulating slowly across the back line.

Develop switching the point of attack through the number 6 to release the opposite fullback beyond pressure.

Organization

Set a 36x28m area with two centre-backs, two fullbacks, pivot, two wide targets and three or four pressers. Start on one side, attract the press, connect into the pivot and release the opposite fullback into a marked wide exit zone. Reset from the opposite side.

Coaching Points

Pivot scans both sides before receiving | First touch opens toward the weak side | Far fullback stays high enough to stretch the press | Pass through the pivot with tempo | Support behind the switch in case forward play is blocked

Progressions

  • Allow pressers to jump the pivot aggressively and reward a third-man bounce around them.

Regressions

  • Use three passive pressure references and unlimited touches.
