Tackle-and-Secure — First Pass Back, Then Counter

A transition game that deliberately rewards control after the regain. When a player wins the ball through a tackle, the first pass must go to a supporting teammate behind the ball before the team can attack forward.

Develop the decision to secure possession with a safe backward pass immediately after a tackle before launching the counterattack.

Organization

Play 4v4 to 6v6 in a 32x24m area with mini-goals. If possession changes through a tackle or interception, the new team must complete one backward or square secure pass before it can attack a goal. After that pass, normal counterattack rules apply.

Coaching Points

Winner protects the first touch | Support player stays available behind the regain | Secure pass should remove immediate pressure | Forward runners start as the safe pass travels | Do not confuse safety with slow play

Progressions

  • Limit the counter to five seconds after the secure pass is completed.

Regressions

  • Allow either a backward or lateral secure pass and enlarge the area.
