Third-Man Passing Triangle — Play, Set and Break

A three-player passing pattern focused on the third-man principle. Players pass, set and break forward while constantly adjusting their supporting angle and body position.

Organization

Create two or more triangles with cones. Three players work in each triangle while spare players rotate in. Start with a pass into the middle player, a set to the supporting player and a third-player run beyond the next cone.

Coaching Points

Check shoulders before receiving | Set the ball with the correct weight | Time the third-player run after the first pass | Play around the corner with an open body | Accelerate after the combination

Progressions

  • Add a passive defender in the centre and require players to choose which side to break.

Regressions

  • Use fixed passing directions and remove the defender.
