Track the Third-Man Run — Pass Runner On and Recover

A defending exercise against a three-player combination where the original passer runs beyond after a set. Defenders must recognise the third-man run, pass responsibility between units and recover into protective positions.

Organization

Set a 26x20m channel with three attackers and three defenders. Attackers use a pass-set-third-man sequence toward an end gate. Defenders start matched but may exchange opponents as the runner crosses lines. Award points for denying entry or intercepting the final pass.

Coaching Points

See both the ball and the runner | Communicate the handover before the runner crosses your line | Nearest defender pressures the ball while the next protects depth | Do not all follow the ball-side movement | Recover inside after passing the runner on

Progressions

  • Allow attackers to choose between the third-man run and keeping possession underneath.

Regressions

  • Rehearse the combination at controlled speed with one passive defender.
