3v2 + Recovery Runner — Finish Before Equality

Three attackers counter against two set defenders, but a third defender starts behind the play and recovers at speed. Attackers must recognise whether to finish early, commit a defender or use the free player before the overload disappears.

Develop decision-making in a 3v2 counterattack while a recovering defender races back to create 3v3.

Organization

Use a 36x28m channel to a full goal with goalkeeper. Three attackers start near halfway against two defenders; recovering defender begins 8–12m behind the attackers and starts as soon as the first pass is played. Rotate groups every repetition.

Coaching Points

First action goes forward if possible | Use width to stretch the two defenders | Do not over-pass while the overload exists | Ball carrier commits one defender before releasing | Recovering defender protects the centre first on arrival

Progressions

  • Move the recovering defender farther back or impose a 7-second scoring limit.

Regressions

  • Start the recovering defender closer and allow attackers to begin with a static ball.
