Organization

Mark two half-space pockets between midfield and defence. Use an attacking 8 and 10, a central passer, striker and supporting wide players against a compact defensive unit. The 8 and 10 stay on opposite sides of the pivot and rotate heights without entering the same pocket.

Coaching Points

Occupy both sides of the pivot | Do not stand at the same height | Receive on the half-turn when possible | If one pocket closes, move the ball to access the other | Striker pins the next line to preserve space

Progressions

  • Allow the defensive pivot to pass players on with a second midfielder and increase rotation freedom.

Regressions

  • Protect the two pockets from direct defender entry.
