Low-Block Edge Jump — 6 Steps to Shooter, CBs Hold the Box

A box-defending practice where the danger changes from a cross to a recycled pass at the edge. The 6 must leave the line at the correct moment while the centre-backs resist stepping out together.

Coordinate a low block so the 6 jumps to an edge-of-box shooter while the centre-backs remain connected to the box.

Organization

Use a full-size goal with goalkeeper. Three attackers occupy the box, one attacker starts at the edge and a wide player serves against two centre-backs, fullback and 6. The ball can be crossed or recycled to the edge shooter.

Coaching Points

6 scans the edge player before the cross | Jump as the recycle pass travels | Centre-backs hold box positions and runners | Fullback protects the wide second action | If the 6 cannot arrive, block the shooting lane rather than diving in

Progressions

  • Add a second late edge runner from the weak side.

Regressions

  • Predetermine the recycle and use passive box attackers.
